New rates not meant to squeeze people
Extracted from Sunday Tribune 29 May 2006 Fears that a proposed Property Rates Bill – which would allow the central government to seta maximum limit on what properties can be rated by municipal government – will be punitive are unfounded, says South Africa’s provincial affairs and local government minister Sydney Mufamadi.
While there have been e-mails flowing around the country form pressure groups, municipal ratepayers and ratepayers’ organizations which express fear that owners would pay punitive rates as a result of the bill, Mufamadi has assured the public that the desirability of the law had been “assessed”. - Sapa
